2008.1.24 ---------------------------------- AsiaFI Final Proposal ----------------------------------- 1. Long term research (10-15 years) AsiaFI focuses primarily on the long term research(10-15 years) with secondary focus on the middle term research(5-10 years). 2. Open Research AsiaFI's research activity shall be open. 3. CJK vs Asia We start with CJK first, then expand to Asia as soon as possible. 4.. Education for Graduate Students We emphasize on the graduate student education since the Future Internet projects is the long term project with heavy emphasis on research and much of the research would be carried out by these graduate students and young researchers. 5. Synergy and Symbiosis Synergy and symbiosis are important factors when international collaboration in Asia is carried out. 6. Loose federation vs tight collaboration We need to have loose federation and tight collaboration as each country has its own situation. But collaboration should be done in tight fashion so that we can encourage people work hard toward the goal. 7. Testbeds(Backbone) There are four areas on Testbed activity 1) Requirement analysis 2) Design of a testbed 3) Operation of the testbed 4) Usage of the testbed AsiaFI focuses on the user requirement, and usage of the testbed. We have to coordinate some areas on the testbed activities with other organizations including APAN as well as organizations in North America and Europe. Working relationship with regional organizations such as APAN and relevant organizations of other continents such as GENI and FIRE need to be defined properly. We expect the wireless and sensor network testbeds to be handled primarily by Mobile/Wireless WG. 8. Membership Structure There are two kinds of memberships at AsiaFI; - Individual Member - Sponsoring Organization The primary member is the individual member, but the sponsoring organizations such as national associations, and testbed operators are also important members. 9. Intercontinental Collaboration AsiaFI is expected to be the primary regional organization in Asia. AsiaFI plans to collaborate with other regional organiations as well as national organizations in Asia. AsiaFI plans also to collaborate with organizations in other continents. AsiaFI may facilitate national organizations to collaborate with organizations in Asia and other continents as needed. 10. Finance AsiaFI is expected to be a lean organization on finance, which may be carried out by contribution of sponsoring organizations and events. We anticipate $30,000 or more for the first year. 11. Centers of Excellence We agreed the need to have several "Centers of Excellence" in Asia. A typical center may have 50 or more fulltime researchers including professors and Ph.D course students. University professors and graduate students are counted as 0.5 FTE in this context. Significant ratio of the researchers may be invited from other countries. AsiaFI intends to develop network of excellence to assist realization of the centers of excellence among others. 12. Research Focus We should focus on the vertical research(application to infrastructure) as well as horizontal research. 13. Fair Share We shall put effort to contribute fair share on research output along other continents. 14. Initial Activities - Working Group (candidates): mobile/wireless architecture/building blocks trust/security service applications - Testbed Committee - Education Committee Primarily for Ph.D students(next generation researchers) with course offering, joint thesis supervision, and visits. - Event Committee Annual meeting Conference Workshop Tutorial - Joint Project Joint projects between AsiaFI members, and between AsiaFI member and others. We may start with sample experiments in the region, and intercontinetally. 15. Regional Collaboration We need to define good collaboration scheme with the relevant organizations such as APAN on the testbed design and operation as well as prototyping, measurement, and other technical and engineering effort. 16. Public Relation We need to have activities on good public relation including conferences organized by ACM, IEEE and others. We may also co-locate some of AsiaFI events with APAN and other organizations to promote public relation as well as collaboration.
