2007.8.23 ------------------------------------------------------------------- draft-004. AsiaFI - Graduate Student Education and Research - discussion memo -------------------------------------------------------------------- Future Internet development is of long term; 10~15 years, and we have to prepare accordingly. One of the emphases we should make is gradaute students, who could play the major role on Future Internet development like the original Arpanet development in 1960s-1970s. Moreover, it is a very good occasion to get involved in the major development from scratch; once-in-40 years experience. Thus, we should pay particular attention to the graduate students; education and research. In Europe, EuroNGI(EuroFGI) is emphasizing on the graduate student involvement. In USA, the graduate students are always playing major role on the Internet development since 1960s. Here is what I can recommend to do; 1. Academic Courses We may develop advanced graduate courses on Future Internet and its component technologies. The courses may be shared among AsiaFI member institutions. The courses may include Introduction to Future Internet Architecture Security Mobility Later, we may offer hands-on experiment on GENI and other testbeds. 2. Short Courses We may offer various short courses, typically one week or two. This is very common in Europe. We may also offer shorter courses such as 1~3 days, possibly as tutorials. The courses may be similar to the academic courses, but compressed ones. We may invite instructors from other continents as appropriate. 3. Ph.D Thesis We may collaborate on Ph.D thesis including a. Database on Ph.D Thesis We may develop the database on the Ph.D thesis such as titles, abstract, presentation material, proposal,... EuroNGI is developing one now. b. Ph.D Thesis Committee We may share Ph.D thesis committee among member institutions of AsiaFI. 4. Visits We may encourage long-term(1 or 2 semesters) visits of Ph.D students as well as short-term visits among the AsiaFI member institutions as well as cooperative institutions in other continents. 5. Other Activities We may encourage graduate students to participate in AsiaFI working group activities. Please note that Internet RFC was started by UCLA graduate students in 1970s. 6. Remark We should nominate professors (and graduate students) in charge of the education of graduate students in each country (and major universities optionally) to form a committee to start coordination. We may start the one-week courses as early as 2008Q1. The academic courses may be started soon, too.
